Looking for a Freeview box that can record to a SD card

Posted by desire.athow  Published in Deals

In the metaverse of bloody obvious inventions that never were, I’d like to introduce a Freeview box that can record to a SD Card. Actually such a beast does not exist and it is a real pity. Only for me though.

I’m looking for a worthy replacement to my computer which I am using to record series and movies which I then transfer to my faithful Toshiba E400 PDA player, which accompanies me during my solitary commutes. Saves me time and having to stare at my shoes.

I’ve been toying with the idea of purchasing this Panasonic DMREZ25 Multi format, Freeview upscaling Recorder which costs £114 on Ebay delivered. It is a DVD recorder which can record up to 17 hours on one DVD disc.

But then, I don’t want to lose time in copying the disc on my computer and then copying it up on my PDA. Utter loss of time.

On the other hand, The SanDisk V-Mate Video Memory Card Recorder might be that special beast I am after. At just under £35 it connects to any analog video source and sucks the content directly to a memory card in glorious MP4 format. However, after close inspection , it seems that it won’t be useful for me at all.

Which brings me back to my initial starting point. Where can I find a freeview box that can record straight to a memory card. With the growing number of card based players, there’s bound to be a manufacturer which comes up with such a product.

Think about it, who wouldn’t like to watch Eastenders’ omnibus on its 3-inch smartphone? Hey! That’s something I’ve been looking for for the best part of 24 months.

An Update on Microsoft and Yahoo

Posted by desire.athow  Published in Deals

I am not a proponent of Microsoft buying Yahoo… Here’s what I said on Battellemedia about the whole thing.

Google’s bound to be the winner. Listen to this week’s TWIT podcast for some nice words from Scoble (whatever you might think of him).

If Yahoo refuses the bid, its shares will go down and it will slowly but surely wane away until finally someone buys its carcass: Google and Microsoft are winners

If Yahoo accepts the bid, Microhoo will take at least 18 months for the digestion to take place. Ever witnessed a Python eating an alligator.

The acquisition will take the focus away from MS’s core products and services and will make it even more vulnerable to Google.

IMHO, the web is not Microsoft’s favourite turf and although it has several great brands like MSN, IE and Live, it still lacks that little something that makes Google so dazzling.

You can read my complete coverage for the past week over at ITProPortal.com as well as a Snapshot of Techmeme’s coverage on Friday night.

The perfect laptop under £300 : A Dell not from Dell

Posted by desire.athow  Published in Deals

It is certainly not worth an Apple laptop by its looks but it is worth every single penny. Meet my new laptop, the Dell Vostro 1000. The Vostro 1000 is the entry level laptop and carries a starting price of £199 excluding VAT and delivery.

My laptop can be configured on Dell’s site and is currently valued at £368.36 including VAT and free delivery.

The Dell Vostro 1000 comes with an AMD Sempron 3500+, 1GB memory, a huge 120GB hard disk drive, a DVD writer, an ATI chipset - which provides with a X1150 graphics module - a 15.4 inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, 802.11g laptop, Windows Vista Home Basic and a four cell battery.

However, the icing on the cake was a three year Next Business Day warranty that expires in December 2010.

And the price I paid? Well, how about £274, nearly £100 less than at Dell’s. This was made possible as I did not purchase it from Dell. Instead, I bought my laptop from MCSCOM which is an authorised Dell refurbisher/reseller.

When Dell computers and laptops which are returned for a reason or another are refurbished by Dell and resold through these third parties.

There are at least a dozen of them and Dell even has an Outlet and an Ebay presence to flog these “unwanted” machines to bargain hunters.

To sweeten the deal, Dell sells most computers that it has refurbished with a three year, no-nonsense warranty which on its own carries a three figure tag.

There are a number of issues and problems though which I have encountered but none related to the service which I have received from MCSCOM. They have been very helpful and communicative during the whole purchase process and have replied to my numerous queries very quickly. Thumbs up to them.

The nagging problems are related to Windows Vista and to the laptop itself.

Testing the Asus EEE Laptop

Posted by desire.athow  Published in Deals

I am currently testing the Asus EEE laptop which is certainly one of the most disruptive pieces of hardware I’ve laid my hands upon in the recent years.

It has been launched officially in the UK back in October and is currently out of stock almost everywhere.

Like the Nintendo Wii Console, you can get it at a price on Ebay and through usual barter-and-buy outlets.

First impressions are excellent, especially given the relatively short amount of time that Asus had on its hands to deliver such a project.

You can read more about the story behind the Asus EEE laptop on Forbes (The Jonney Machine) and on Wikipedia.

Choosing the right bulb - My MR16 decision

Posted by desire.athow  Published in Deals, Energy Saving, House

MR16 wilkinson

One easy trick to save money (and incidentally reduce your carbon footprint) is to change your house lighting. My house has 15 halogen MR16 50w Philips light bulbs. If I were to switch them on simultaneously, they would suck in a worrying large 750w worth of power.

MR16 lamps are recessed bulbs (they go in the ceiling rather than hanging from it) that are stylish and give a nice warm yellowish, incandescent light - which is why they’re so popular.

After weighing the pros and cons of going for a white light LED MR16 solution, today I purchased a pair of 35w MR16 light from Wilkinson. They’re only £1.99 the pack of 2 and well, from a subjective point of view, they appear to be brighter than the Philips 50w bulbs they’re replacing. That’s a saving of 15w per lamp (30% saving).

Wilkinson have been and are still an underrated, unloved high street brand but their products are well priced and perform better than average, from my POV.

Screwfix Halogen Lamp

However, if you’ve got one Screwfix outlet near you, you could grab MR16 for cheap. They’re on sale over there (a clearout actually) for £1 a pair.

I’m pretty pleased with them, which means that I’ll upgrade all of my lamps for an additional £13, an investment that I will hopefully recoup pretty quickly as we near Winter Time.

But there’s even more saving coming up when I replace my Halogen Standing Lamp and try to use 20w bulbs instead to save a massive 6o%.
